Han Logement inaugurates 16 accessible units in Windsor

Windsor, June 11, 2024

The NPO Han Logement today inaugurated two newly built 8-unit buildings on Simoneau Street in Windsor, Québec. Designed to provide persons with a physical or intellectual disability, or living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with affordable housing, the 16-unit $3.75-million project was made possible by a partnership between Han Logement, the Fonds immobilier de solidarité FTQ and the Government of Canada, which invested $400,000 through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's Affordable Housing Fund.

The City of Windsor and local business people concerned with the well-being of their community's members also made a significant contribution to the project. Providing the mortgage, Desjardins Entreprises played a major financial role, as did the Caisse d'économie solidaire Desjardins (Cécosol).

"It's always been difficult for disabled people to find suitable housing at a reasonable price. In times like these, when we are faced with a housing crunch, our mission takes on its full meaning. If families are struggling to find a place to live, you can be sure that it's even tougher for low-income people with a disability. Our organization is booming, and more and more cities are calling on us to offer their most vulnerable citizens a long-term solution to their needs. Collective involvement is extremely important in all our projects, and Windsor is an example of the desire to build an inclusive community where people can flourish in the best possible conditions. I would like to thank all those who participated in any way and hope that the tenants of these accessible apartments will take full advantage of this opportunity."

Gilles Daoust, Board Chair, Han-Logement

"I'm delighted that Windsor can now offer affordable, accessible housing to 16 individuals or families with one or more members with a disability.Han Logement is a pioneer in this field: as far back as 2002, our organization was building housing to provide people with disabilities with a suitable place to live. Our concept has proved itself and demand is growing. We started with projects in various Eastern Townships municipalities and have since branched out into other regions of Québec.

Today, we have 43 buildings and 293 units to our credit, including about 40 units under construction in the Lower St. Lawrence and Gaspé regions, and more to come. We're very proud of the projects Han Logement has completed to date, and we're excited and committed to continue delivering on our mission."

Anik Roy Trudel, Managing Director, Han-Logement

"I'm delighted to see this important real estate project come to fruition as it embodies our commitment to offering inclusive and accessible housing to all our citizens. These new apartments will enable 16 individuals or families who have a member with a disability to live in an environment adapted to their needs, thus allowing them to be more independent and contributing to their well-being. Windsor continues to demonstrate that inclusion and support for our most vulnerable residents is a top priority."

Sylvie Bureau, Mayor of Windsor

"We first teamed up with Han Logement in 2017 and it's impressive to see how the partnership has evolved. We are proud to support the creation of new, affordable accessible housing to meet the needs of people with disabilities. With housing in short supply, we need to restore the balance, and as such, our priority is to increase the availability of all types of housing." Martin Raymond, President and CEO, Fonds immobilier de solidarité FTQ

"The federal government will always redouble its efforts to ensure that everyone in Quebec and across Canada has a safe and stable place to call home. Through the Affordable Housing Fund and with collaboration between all levels of government, we are quickly providing new affordable housing to those who need it most across the country."

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities
