"In 1984, Brian Mulroney was part of a bold group of people who supported the creation of the Fonds de solidarité FTQ. Forty years later, thanks to the Fonds, Québec workers are better prepared for retirement, entrepreneurs continue to grow their businesses, and Québec's regions continue to expand their economies. Thank you, Mr. Mulroney, for believing in us. On behalf of the Fonds de solidarité FTQ, we extend our deepest condolences to Brian Mulroney's family and friends."

As part of a special feature published byLe Devoirin 2014, the former prime minister recalled the Fonds' creation in 1984 (translation):

"In addition to creating and maintaining jobs by investing in SMEs, the Fonds de solidarité was intended to help Quebecers save for their retirement. "We were much less equipped than we are today," said Mr. Mulroney, noting the "important initiatives" taken by Québec Finance Minister Jacques Parizeau and his federal counterpart Michael Wilson to encourage people to save. "These gestures slowly, over time, changed Quebecers' attitudes."
