Bas-Saint-Laurent

Socioeconomic profile

Natural resources, especially forests, are the very foundation of this region’s economy. The manufacturing sector is dominated by lumber and pulp and paper companies and resource processing also plays an important role in the economy. Bas-Saint-Laurent is the leading peat producer in Québec.

Other key industries include railroad rolling stock manufacturing, agri-food, communications and new information technology. As a result of its geographic location, Rimouski has, over the years, become a maritime hub, boasting the largest cluster of science and technology research centres outside Montréal and Québec City.
