Sustainable Development

The principles of sustainable development have been an overarching component of the Fonds de solidarité FTQ’s mission, values and practices since its inception.
  • In August 2014, the Fonds’ board of directors adopted a Sustainable Development Framework Policy (revised in 2016) that defines the organization’s overall direction and approach to sustainable development and responsible investment.

Local economic development is at the core of our business model

The Fonds contributes to the economic vitality of Québec and its regions by, among other things:
  • providing Quebecers with access to an advantageous RRSP and raising awareness about the importance of saving for retirement; and
  • using their retirement savings to offer patient capital to Québec businesses to help them grow and create, maintain and protect jobs.

Putting people at the forefront of our investments and partner support service

When it comes to labour relations and human rights, the Fonds’ values and practices go beyond regulatory requirements. For example, the Fonds:

  • performs due diligence prior to any investment to assess the profile of the workforce, working conditions, the quality of communications within the company, adherence to health and safety standards, and environmental compliance;
  •  has adopted an international code of conduct;
  • has adopted voting guidelines allowing it to act consistently and in accordance with its values;
  • offers workshops to educate workers on economic matters in order to motivate them to do their part to improve their company’s performance;
  • offers strategic and operational support to its partner companies that encourage employee involvement.

Evolving organizational practices to reduce our footprint

The Fonds’ operations and sustainability report and the GRI Index Content reflect the efforts made to advance our organizational practices for continuous improvement.
  • The Fonds has obtained LEED Platinum certification for its head office. The Louis-Laberge Building is the first building in Québec to attain the highest level of the new LEEDv4 O+M certification. The achievement of the platinum level for this building, which had already obtained LEED Gold certification in 2014, speaks to the continuous improvement in the building’s operational practices as they pertain to its management. The building is also BOMA-Best Platinum certified for its exceptional performance in water and energy consumption. Maintaining this dual certification demonstrates the ongoing excellent operation of the systems in the Louis-Laberge building.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions generated by the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders and the National meeting of Local Representatives are offset by the purchase of certified carbon credits.
  • The Fonds favours local, responsible procurement.

Supporting foundations and community organizations across Québec

  • The Fonds has developed a donation and sponsorship policy to frame the process for providing support to non-profit organizations.
  • In addition to its own contribution, the Fonds raises significant funds thanks to the generosity of its employees during the organization’s annual fundraising campaign for Centraide.
