With its rich history and magnificent scenery, the Québec City region is a leading tourist destination. The third most populated in the province, the region ranks second in terms of attracting immigrants. Its economic development index is one of the highest in the province while its unemployment rate is the lowest of all the regions.
Because it is home to the seat of the provincial government, this regional economy is driven by the service sector. That said, the transportation and warehousing, cultural and information industries are also well entrenched. Financial, insurance and real estate services are booming, as are professional, scientific and technical services.
Other growth sectors include the goods producing industries, construction, electrical equipment, appliance and component manufacturing, and metal, plastics and rubber manufacturing. Also very active in research and development, the region is home to many high-tech research centres and their specialized employees.
