Greening of Habitations Le Domaine in Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve

MONTRÉAL, June 7, 2021 – Gérer son quartier is pleased to announce the start of greening work at Habitations Le Domaine, a complex consisting of 111  buildings housing 726 apartments in the Mercier-Ouest neighbourhood of the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.

The goal of the project is to create and develop a gathering and activity area for the community through the installation of educational gardens and a space fitted out with urban furniture. The project is part of a global development vision focused on improving the quality of life of tenants, transforming the environment, reducing heat islands and promoting social inclusion. To this end, the organization must demineralize an area of more than 290 square metres overlooking the backyard of several buildings.

The greening project will be overseen by a steering committee formed of Domaine tenants and partners of the educational gardens, in keeping with the consultation process initiated by Gérer son quartier when the complex was acquired in 2017.

This project is made possible by the financial contributions of Caisse Desjardins des Travailleuses et Travailleurs unis and the Fonds immobilier de solidarité FTQ.

Gérer son quartier also thanks Soverdi, Pépinière, the City of Montréal, the Conseil régional de l'environnement de Montréal and ILEAU for their financial contribution and their involvement in the project.

“This project is in line with the vision of Gérer son quartier and its board of directors to create inclusive and supportive living environments. We would like to thank all the partners who participated in the project in any way.”

Michel Taylor, President of Gérer son quartier

“We are proud to create safe and healthy living environments for tenants by working with local community organizations. This greening project was born out of a desire to provide tenants with a vibrant space to socialize and do gardening work. It is in keeping with the concept of educational gardens whose objective is to raise awareness about the environment  and healthy living habits among young and old.”

Marika Leclerc, Director of Gérer son quartier

“Caisse Desjardins des Travailleuses et Travailleurs unis is proud to be involved as a major partner of Habitations le Domaine with a $25,000 contribution from its Community Development Fund. The greening project at Le Domaine is a sustainable development initiative that takes into account the opinions and choices of the residents in order to enhance the quality of life in this neighbourhood and is perfectly in line with our mission and values.”

Mario Aylwin, General Manager, Caisse Desjardins des Travailleuses et des Travailleurs unis

“Our partnership back in 2017 with Gérer son quartier for the acquisition of Habitations Le Domaine is consistent with our mission to support social and affordable housing in order to provide as many Québec households as possible with a decent place to live. Our support for the greening project complements this mission in that it will help create a place people can grow and live, a place to call home. We are happy to contribute to this project and salute all those involved.”
