DESCRIPTION

More than 80% of Québec businesses are family owned yet only 30% make it to the next generation and only 10% reach the third. Resulting in job losses and reduced economic activity, this situation could become problematic for our economy in the medium term.

To help Québec entrepreneurs maintain and perpetuate their business experience, the Solidarity Fund QFL created the Fonds Relève PME, the only program of its kind in Québec, to help family-run and other SMEs grow, diversify and transfer the mantle.

AREAS OF INTERVENTION

  • Financing: This flexible program allows business owners to cash in 20% to 49% of their company’s market value. It also allows the company to gradually purchase the remaining shares over a three- to five-year period.
  • Tax and succession planning: All transactions carried out under the Fonds Relève PME program are structured by the advisors of the participating entrepreneurs, together with those of the Fonds Relève PME, to enable the parties involved to benefit from all available tax advantages.
  • Business management: The Fonds Relève PME also supports business development and decision making so as to maximize business growth and therefore ensure a successful transfer of ownership.
  • Succession: The Fonds Relève PME helps owners appoint and prepare their successor, whether or not he or she is a family member.

INVESTMENT CRITERIA

  • The Fonds Relève PME can invest in almost every sector of the economy.
  • Financially sound companies with a minimum capitalization of $500,000 and a plan for sustained growth.
  • Ideally, the successor has already been appointed.

A prestigious partnership
Because handing over the reins is a sensitive matter, the Solidarity Fund QFL has teamed up with the Chaire de développement et de relève de la PME at HEC Montréal to create a Web site geared to business people looking to buy or sell a business. Called Durevealareleve, this site offers a framework of reflection and action applicable to all types of situations involving a business transfer. Visit www.durevealareleve.com
