BACKGROUND

The pulp and paper industry plays an important role in the Québec economy. This is because it is the source of one of the world’s best fibres, enjoys an abundant supply of hydroelectric power and has a highly qualified workforce.

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

In order to ensure its long-term growth and to maintain its advantageous market position, the pulp and paper industry will have to address the following challenges:                                                                   

  • Convert biomass into a broad assortment of products ranging from traditional products such as paper, bioenergy and biofuels to value-added co-products such as biomaterials and biochemicals;
  • Cut production costs through equipment upgrades;
  • Develop new markets.
