Construction and construction materials

BACKGROUND

The construction industry, which includes civil engineering and roadwork, and industrial, commercial and residential construction, is a major contributor to the Québec economy, accounting for 22% or nearly one quarter of its output. This industry encompasses the construction and rehabilitation of roadways, ports, quays, dams, hydroelectric plants, métro tunnels and water treatment plants, as well as the construction and renovation of commercial, government and residential infrastructures.

Directly related to construction, the materials industry also holds tremendous growth potential. However, in order to succeed in sometimes unstable economic and climate conditions, Québec’s companies will have to be innovative, both in terms of product performance and their presence on the domestic and foreign markets.

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

In order to ensure its long-term growth and to maintain its advantageous market position, the construction and construction materials industry will have to address the following challenges:

  • An aging workforce;
  • A shortage of specialized labour;
  • Rising material costs.
