Socioeconomic profile

The heart of Québec’s economic activity, Montréal is also the most cosmopolitan and heavily populated region of the province, accounting for nearly 25% of its residents. Montréal is building a growing reputation on the international scene as a city of knowledge, a high-tech hub, and a creative, cultural centre. Many of Québec’s businesses are headquartered there.

The service sector is a driving force, accounting for almost 86% of the jobs in the region. ICT, life sciences, health technologies and aerospace are key industries and a testament to the metropolitan area’s diverse economic base. Although not immune to the impact of globalization, the Montréal economy is so dynamic, it stimulates innovation and can justly be called Quebec’s economic engine.
