Abitibi-Témiscamingue

Socioeconomic profile

With a population of 145,000 spread across 65,000 km2, Abitibi –Témiscamingue was built around natural resource exploitation.

Known for its mining potential, fertile soil and abundant forests, the region is home to many companies involved in forestry, mining and exploration and accounts for five times more jobs in these fields than anywhere else in Québec. Most of the processing is resource based.

In light of its abundant lakes and rivers, the region holds tremendous hydroelectricity potential. Its expertise in natural resource exploitation is well known; however, holding on to this regional expertise poses a formidable challenge.
