The Fonds de solidarité FTQ was very pleased to financially support, as Silver Partner, the first International Summit of Cooperatives, which was held in Québec City in October 2012. This summit, which was a pivotal event of the International Year of Cooperatives, was attended by over 2,800 representatives and future leaders of cooperatives and mutuals from 91 countries. Participants came together to engage in in-depth discussions on the business challenges facing the cooperative and mutualist movements. The other objectives of the event were to help facilitate networking and inter-cooperation, inform governments, regulatory authorities and the general public more on the cooperative model and find concrete ways to stimulate the development of this sector at the local, national and international levels. Cooperatives and mutuals contribute to the socio-economic wellbeing of people and communities and to a balanced and more stable plural economy; they are an important part of the world economy and contribute to sustainable development.
